Tennis Finishes Fifth at WIAC Championships

MADISON – The University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point women's tennis team totaled eight team points on their way to a fifth place finish at the 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Championships at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Pointers finished the 2010 Championships with eight team points, a combination of regular-season dual meet standings and WIAC championship results. A team's finish in the regular-season standings accounted for one-third of the criteria, while the conference championship accounted for the remaining two-thirds.

UW-Whitewater won its third consecutive WIAC title and its 11th overall while UW-La Crosse finished second, UW-Eau Claire third and UW-Oshkosh fourth. UW-River falls and UW-Stout finished tied for sixth. 

At No. 4 singles, Monica Preisig (Wausau, WI/West) rebounded from a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to UW-Eau Claire's Gretchen Bachmeier to win her second round match against UW-Stout's Stephanie Schick 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3 and her fifth place match against UW-river Falls' Cassie Swenson 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2. 

Leah Benn (Stevens Point/SPASH) (No. 5) and Allison Fortier (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander) (No. 6) each posted a fifth place finishes at the 2010 Championships. Benn recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles in the fifth place match. Fortier won her fifth place match 6-3, 6-2. Both players dropped their opening round match and received a second round bye.

In an extremely difficult No. 1 seeded singles flight, Rachel Brown (Neenah, WI/St. Mary Central) lost her opening round match but rebounded with three set victory in the second round to advance to the fifth place match, eventually falling to fourth-seeded Jenny Paxton of UW-River Falls 6-3, 7-6 (3).

In doubles action, the team of Leah Benn (Stevens Point/SPASH) and Katelyn Presti (Janesville, WI/Parker) rebounded from an opening round 8-1 loss to secure a spot in the fifth place match thanks to an 8-3 decision over UW-Stout. In the fifth place match, the Pointers came up just short, falling to Jenny Paxton and Lizzie Johnson of UW-River Falls 8-2.

UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh advance to a team tournament in the spring that will be hosted by UW-Whitewater the weekend prior to the NCAA Division III Championship. The winner of the four-team tournament receives the conference's automatic bid into the national event.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire's Stephanie Wolf, UW-La Crosse's Kelly Stadum, UW-Oshkosh's Whitney Tornow,UW-River Falls' Amanda Drangeid, UW-Stevens Point's Allison Fortier (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander), UW-Stout's Katie Sorensen and UW-Whitewater's Lauren Aguilar.
