Tommies End Pointers Season with 6-0 Defeat

Box Score

OSHKOSH – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team's tournament run came to an early end on Friday afternoon, as the Pointers fell 6-0 to the Tommies of St. Thomas the team's second elimination game of the 2009 NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at E.J. Schneider Memorial Field.

St. Thomas (34-12) advances to face St. Olaf at 11 a.m. on Saturday for the right to advance regional title and a trip to the Division III World Series.

Stevens Point was unable to get the offense clicking on against St. Thomas starter John Licht, as he retired the Pointers in order for the first three innings.

In the third, down 2-0, Eric Fritz (Custer) led off the inning with the Pointers first hit but advanced no farther than second as Licht again stopped the Pointers cold, striking out the side.

St. Thomas added another two runs in the top of the fourth and one more run in the sixth and ninth innings, more than enough cushion for Licht, who pitched his first complete game of the season.

The shutout was also the first of the season for the Pointers.

Fritz finished the day as the only pointer with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

Licht improved to 5-2 for the Tommies, scattering four pointer hits and racking up nine strikeouts.

Senior Garrett Nix (Osseo) suffered the loss, his second of the season, throwing seven innings. He allowed just five hits and five runs, two earned, and struck out one. Eric Van Beck (Hartland) pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits.

The Pointers finish the season 31-16, the programs eighth 30-win season, all coming since 1997.
