Pointers Regional Run Stays Alive with Victory over Beloit

Box Score

OSHKSOH – Facing elimination after a 17 inning marathon loss to St. Thomas on Wednesday, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team rebounded with an 8-2 victory over the Buccaneers of Beloit College in the second day of the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at E.J. Schneider Field.

The Pointers keep their tournament journey alive and will play another game on Friday, May 15 at 1 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.

Stevens Point got on the board early against the Buccaneers, plating three runs on four hits in the top of the second, as Sam Spurney (Manitowoc) rebounded from an 0-8 day on the tournament's opening day to smash a solo-shot beyond the left field wall. Later in the inning, a Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh) triple plated Cody Koback (Plover). Thomas later scored on an Eric Fritz (Custer) single.

Jared Surman (Kimberly) added another run for the Pointers in the third, sending a Jordan DeGeorge offering over the outfield wall, giving the Pointers the 4-0 lead.

The Pointers continued the hit parade in the fourth inning, as Kyle Cummings (Prentice) drove in two runs with a right field single, scoring Koback and Jordan Rennicke (Mequon), giving the Pointers a 6-0 advantage.

In the seventh, Beloit senior Jon Morgan cut the Pointers lead to 6-2 with just one swing of the bat, sending the Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes) pitch beyond the outfield fence.

In the eighth, the Pointers pushed the lead back to six, as Koback connected for his sixth home run of the season, driving in Rennicke.

The Buccaneers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Tyler Lorenz (Pembine) forced Ryan Schmitz to fly out to right field, ending the threat and securing the victory.

Barry picked up his seventh win of the season, pitching seven innings of six-hit baseball, allowing two runs, both earned while striking out six. Lorenz pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking one.

Beloit finishes the season 28-9 after their first trip to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.
