STEVENS POINT – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team couldn't hold onto a 4-0 lead in game one or a 3-0 lead in game two as UW-Whitewater won a pair of games by a 7-5 margin at University Field Monday afternoon.
The result capped off a four game sweep for the Warhawks over UW-Stevens Point, and drops the Pointers to 2-4 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play and 11-7 overall.
In game one, three walks and a double by
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) translated into two first inning runs and a 2-0 UW-Stevens Point lead. A two run home run in the second inning by
Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh) stretched the Pointers' lead to 4-0. UW-Whitewater got a run back in the fourth and scored five more runs in the sixth off three singles, two doubles and two errors. The Pointers plated a run which cut the deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but could not complete the comeback.
Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes) picked up the loss for UW-Stevens Point after going 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out six.
Archambeau smashed a three-run home run over the right field wall in the third inning of game two to give the Pointers a 3-0 lead. The Warhawks rallied with seven unanswered runs before a
Steve Considine (Portage) two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth.
Pointers' pitcher
Scott Williams (Baraboo) was charged with the loss after giving up four earned runs over 7.1 innings of work in game two. Aaron Dott struck out 11 in a complete game effort for UW-Whitewater.
Archambeau finished 4 for 9 on the day with four RBI while Thomas went 3 for 7 with three RBI.
UW-Stevens Point will look to rebound with a home doubleheader against Ripon College on Tuesday. Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
