SUPERIOR – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team belted six home runs on Saturday afternoon, three by
Jared Surman (Kimberly), and scored 19 runs to take both games of the doubleheader against the Yellowjackts of UW-Superior 10-7 and 9-2.
In game one, the Yellowjackets jumped in front 4-1 after five innings before the Pointer bats came alive in the sixth, when
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) belted a three-run shot to tie the game at four runs apiece.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Yellowjackets scored three runs of their own to retake the lead, 7-4.
The Pointers cut the deficit to one, 7-6, in the seventh as Richter drove in two runs on a single to right center which scored
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) and
Kyle Cummings (Prentice). In the top of the eighth, Surman led off the inning with a home run and later
Sam Spurney (Manitowoc) singled to right center scoring another Pointer run, giving the Stevens Point the 8-7 advantage.
In the ninth, Cummings drove in a run and
Eric Fritz (Custer) scored on a wild pitch to give the Pointers two insurance runs and a 10-7 lead.
Jeff Zielke (Watertown), who entered the game in the eighth, retired all three batters he faced in the ninth, recording his fifth save of the season.
Tyler Lorenz (Pembine) picked up the win, his fourth of the season, pitching two innings in relief of starter
Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes). Lorenz allowed just three hits and one run, walking two. Zielke allowed just one hit and recorded two strikeouts in his two innings. Barry went the opening five innings, allowing six runs, five earned before coming out in the sixth.
In game two, the Pointers bats stayed hot, as Surman connected on a solo home run in the second and Richter added another in the third, giving the Pointers the early 2-0 advantage. After scoring two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead, the Pointers went deep again, as
Cody Koback (Plover) homered to lead off the sixth and, after a
Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh) walk, Surman landed a ball beyond the outfield fence, giving the Pointers a 7-0 edge.
Superior scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Pointers took both runs back in the top of the ninth to regain the seven run lead and pick up the team's 22nd win of the season.
Scott Williams (Baraboo) recorded the win, his second of the season, going seven strong innings, allowing one hit and recording six strikeouts.
Ryan Povlick (Greendale) pitched the final two innings in relief, walking two batters and allowing both runs.
The Pointers (22-10, 10-6 WIAC) and Yellowjackets (12-20,4-11 WIAC) are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, April 26 in the final two games of the season series, slated for a Noon start in Superior.
