STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team earned a split with the visiting Titans of UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 12-10 in 10 innings with a walk-off home run by
Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) before dropping the nightcap 9-6.
The Pointers (20-10, 8-6 WIAC) and Titans (16-12, 8-6 WIAC) entered Wednesday's game tied in the conference standings and exit the day the same way.
In game one, the Titans jumped ahead to a 6-4 lead after four innings, but the Pointers came storming back to take an 8-7 lead after the seventh inning. The Titans plated three runs in the top of the eighth to pull back in front 10-8.
The Pointers responded in their half of the eighth, as
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) and
Cody Koback (Plover) both homered to tie the game at ten.
The Titans loaded the bases in their half of the ninth, but Koback forced Titan third baseman Kyle Kannenberg to ground into the inning-ending 1-2-3 double play, ending the threat.
In the bottom of the tenth after a Richter double,
Sam Spurney (Manitowoc), the reigning WIAC Player of the Week, went deep for the fifth time this season, giving the Pointers the two run victory.
Tyler Lorenz (Pembine) picked up the win, throwing a one-hit tenth inning. Starter
Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay) went 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, recording four strikeouts. Koback went 3.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on eight his, recording a strikeout.
At the plate, Richter finished 4-for-6 with two RBIs while Spurney finished 2-for-6 with three RBIs.
In game two, the Titans again built a large lead, pulling in front 6-0 after three innings. The Pointers fought back, plating five runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to knot the score at six, but the Titans added one in the sixth and two in the eighth to salvage the split.
Eric Van Beck (Hartland) took the loss for the Pointers, throwing 5.1 innings in relief of starter
Garrett Nix (Osseo). Van Beck recorded four strikeouts on the day while allowing six hits and three runs, all earned.
Titan starter Ryan Demmin went the distance for the win, allowing seven hits and recording seven strikeouts in the complete game victory.
At the plate,
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) finished the day 1-4 but added three RBIs while
Eric Fritz (Custer)was the only Pointer with multiple hits, finishing the day 2-for-5.
The Pointers and Titans will square off again next week Wednesday, April 29 in the final two games of the season series.
