Pointers Take Two from Eagles to Complete Weekend Sweep

LA CROSSE – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the UW-La Crosse Eagles on Sunday afternoon, winning the opener 13-3 and the nightcap 8-7. The win improves the Pointers to 19-9 overall, 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

The loss drops La Crosse to 16-10 overall, 9-7 in league play.

The Pointers opened the game with two runs in the top of the first and added three more in the third to take a 5-2 lead after three. The Pointers tacked on two more runs in the seventh and three each in the eighth and ninth innings to pull way for the 10-run victory.

Brad Archambeau (Watertown) finished the day 4-5, scoring three runs scored and Sam Spurney (Manitowoc) finished the day 3-6 with six RBIs including two home runs. Eight of the nine Pointer starters in game one finished with at least one hit.

Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes) picked up the win in game one, his third of the season, throwing 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits, and two earned runs. He also tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts.

In game two, Spurney started the Pointer scoring with a two-run single in the top of the first and Kyle Cummings (Prentice) scored in the second, giving the Pointers a 3-1 advantage. In the third Spurney doubled in another Pointer run and later scored on a Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) triple. Richter later scored giving the Pointers the 6-1 advantage.

The Eagles scored three runs in their half of the eighth inning, cutting the Pointer lead to one, 8-7, but Jeff Zielke (Watertown) shut the door, picking up his third win of the season.

Zielke pitched 5.0 innings of relief work, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out four. Spurney finished the day 2-4 with three RBIs, the only Pointer with multiple hits in game two.

The Pointers return to action on Wednesday, April 22 when they host UW-Oshkosh at University Field in Stevens Point. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
