Pointers Salvage Split with Blue Devils

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team salvaged a split on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the first game 8-6 to the visiting Blue Devils of UW-Stout before coming back in the nightcap for the 5-3 victory.

In game one, the visiting Blue Devils (14-10, 5-7 WIAC) built an early 7-0 lead after five innings. Playing from behind, the Pointers mounted a comeback, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, a pair in the eighth and one in the ninth, but the Blue Devils added a run in the top of the seventh and held on for the two-run victory.

Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes) took the loss in game one, allowing six runs, five earned in four innings of work, recording two strikeouts. Scott Williams (Baraboo) came on to pitch four innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits while Tyler Lorenz (Pembine) came in for the ninth, allowing one hit.

In game two, the Pointers scored a pair of runs in both the second and fourth innings and added another in the sixth, as Cody Koback (Plover) allowed just four this in 5.1 innings of work, striking out three and picking up the win. Jeff Zielke (Watertown) came in to pitch 3.2 innings of no-hit ball, striking out five to earn the save.

At the plate in game two, Jon Schoch (Chippewa Falls) finished 2-4 with an RBI and scored twice while Steve Considine (Portage) was 2-3 with an RBI.

The Pointers (15-9, 3-5 WIAC) return to action this weekend, April 18-19 when they travel to UW-La Crosse for a four-game series with the Eagles.
