MINNEAPOLIS – The Pointers split their season opener on Tuesday afternoon, picking up a 4-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against St. Olaf before dropping the second game 6-2.
In game one, the Pointers scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning off three St. Olaf errors to take the early lead. From there,
Garrett Nix (Osseo, Osseo-Fairchild) went three more innings, notching seven strikeouts and walking one before surrendering two runs in the top of the fifth. From there
Jeff Zielke (Watertown) came on and shut the door, allowing just one more St. Olaf run over three innings of work, scattering three hits and striking out two as the Pointers held on for the victory.
Garett Bloom (Tomah) was 2-for-3 from the plate and recorded two RBI in the victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader, each team scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning to tie the score at 2-2. St. Olaf added a run in the bottom of the third, another in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull away for the 6-2 victory.
Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes, Wilmot) went five innings for the Pointers, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out five.
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) went 2-for-4 from the plate, scoring a one of the Pointers two runs while
Eric Fritz (Custer, SPASH) notched two walks in the lead-off spot, scoring the other Pointer run.
UW-Stevens Point (1-1) returns to action in Winter Haven, Fla. on March 15 when they will take on Fontbonne (Mo.) in the first game of their Spring Break trip at 8:15 a.m.
