WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a double-header with Washington & Jefferson on Thursday afternoon, winning the first game 10-9 in extra innings but fell 8-2 in game two. The loss was the first of the Florida trip for the Pointers, who now boast an 8-2 overall record.
Behind 8-5 after two innings in game one, the Pointers rallied with a run in the fourth and three in the seventh to tie the game at nine. In the bottom of the 10th,
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice. A
Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh, West) single would bring Richter home, as an error by the shortstop allowed him to score the game winner.
Tyler Lorenz (Pembine, Pembine-Goodman) picked up the victory for the Pointers, pitching just 0.2 innings, striking out one of the two batters he faced.
Cody Koback (Plover, SPASH) threw 5.1 innings of five-hit ball, striking out five in relief of starter
Garrett Nix (Osseo, Osseo-Fairchild).
At the plate,
Eric Fritz (Custer, SPASH) was 2-3 with two walks and scored a run. Richter was 4-6 with two RBI and two runs scored while
Sam Spurney (Manitowoc, Manitowoc Lincoln) and
Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, North) each added multiple hits on the day and both added two RBI.
In game two, Wash. & Jeff. took advantage of four UWSP errors to score six in the bottom of the second and add two more in the bottom of the fourth, as they cruised to the 8-2 win.
Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes, Wilmot) took the loss for the Pointers, allowing six hits in four innings of work, striking out two. The Pointers tallied three hits on the day, Fritz,
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) and
Brent Kakwitch (DePere, West). Kakwitch also scored the only two runs for the Pointers.
The Pointers finish their spring trip 7-1. They will return to action on March 28 when they travel to De Pere for a double-header with St. Norbert, scheduled for a Noon start.
