AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Pointers improved to 5-1 on the season, 4-0 in Florida with two victories on Monday, defeating Greenville 8-2 and 13-3.
In game one, the Pointers took a 4-0 lead after the fourth inning and never looked back, adding two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to cruise to the 8-2 victory.
Scott Williams (Baraboo) tallied the win for the Pointers, throwing five solid innings of one hit baseball, striking out five and walking three to earn the victory.
Mitch Kouba (Maribel, Denmark) came on to pitch the final two innings, striking out two of the nine batters he faced.
Offensively,
Cody Koback (Plover, SPASH) was 3-5 with an RBI while
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) was 1-2 with two RBI in the victory.
In game two, the Pointers found themselves down 3-0 after the top of the first, but added one run in their half of the first and took the lead in the bottom of the second, 4-3. The Pointers broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, when Koback scored on a
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) double,
Jared Surman (Kimberly) singled in a run and Thomas drove in two runs to give UWSP a 8-3 lead. Another big inning followed in the sixth, as five Pointers crossed home, sealing the victory.
Tyler Lorenz (Pembine, Pembine-Goodman) picked up the win for the Pointers in relief, throwing five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
On the day, Richter went 5-7 with three doubles and two RBI in two starts.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Tuesday with a pair of games against Ripon (Wis.) in Winter Park.
