Five Goal Third Lifts Pointers Past Adrian in Season Finale

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. - After two scoreless periods, the Pointer women's hockey team came alive, notching five goals in the third period to defeat the Bulldogs of Adrian College 5-2 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Arrington Ice Arena.

Neither team was able to capitalize on their shots in the first two periods, as the Pointers volleyed 19 shots on net in the first two periods while Adrian tallied 21 on net but both goalies turned away each scoring opportunity.

All that changed in the third, whenKellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN, Centennial) opened the flood gates of what was a seven-goal period, scoring at the 3:21 mark of the period off a Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C., St. George's School (RI)) assist, Nelson's ninth goal of the season.

Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN, Mounds View) added her 11th goal of the season about three minutes later, this time it was Nelson on the assist, giving the Pointers the 2-0 advantage. Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN, Park of Cottage Grove) then tallied her sixth goal of the season at the 9:24 mark, taking a Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN, Burnsville) and Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) pass and finding the back of the net, giving UWSP the 3-0 edge.

Adrian got on the board at the 16:42 mark, as Jessica Grubbs scored her 25th goal of the season for the Bulldogs with the extra attacker on, cutting the Pointer lead to 3-1. Lyndsay Laxton added another Adrian goal just over a minute later, again with the extra attacker on, cutting their deficit to only one, 3-2 with just 2:17 remaining.

With the risk of the extra attacker for Adrian came the rewards for the Pointers, as Grossmann and Nelson added empty-net goals in the game's final minute to give the Pointers the 5-3 win and weekend series split.

d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI, Swartz Creek) tallied 17 of her 38 saves between the pipes for UWSP in the third, earning her 11th win of the season.

The Pointers (14-5-6) will travel to River Falls and take on sixth-seeded Concordia (Wis.) in the opening round of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) playoffs, hosted by UW-River Falls. Please visit athletics.uwsp.edu for details as they become available about the playoff schedule.
