BROWN DEER, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team captured its tenth-straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship on Saturday evening while the women's team finished in second at the three day event.
The Pointer men's team finished with 999.5 points, 248 points ahead of second place UW-La Crosse. The Pointer women's team finished second with 808 points, 162 points behind UW-La Crosse in the race for the women's title.
On Thursday, the Pointers captured four conference championships as
Chase Gross (Edina, MN) won his third 50-yard freestyle championship and set a meet record in the process, finishing with a time of 20.16.
Rob Donisch (Wheaton, IL) won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.61. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Matthew Olp (Oregon),
Ryan Golz (Inver Grove Heights, MN), Rob Donisch and
Sam Davy (Stevens Point) set a new conference record, finishing with a time of 1:22.60. The Pointers also took home the crown in the 400-yard medley relay, as
Brent Schwartz (Waukesha) teamed with Davy, Gross and Olp to set yet another conference record with a time of 3:20.98.
On the women's side,
Lindsay Lukes (Austin, MN) won the conference championship in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 5:01.89.
On Friday, the men extended their day one lead, netting four individual titles and claimed both relay titles on the day with meet record times.
Steve Lynam (Fitchburg) captured the 200-yard freestyle crown with a time of 1:42.10,
Ian Girdley (Verona) secured the 100-yard backstroke title with a time of 52.63, Gross secured his second individual title with a meet record time of 47.89 in the 100-yard butterfly and
Chris Hruska (Verona) captured the 400-yard individual medley championship with a time of 4:05.20. The 800-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay titles also came Stevens Point's way, both in record times of 6:49.43 and 1:32.26 respectively.
On the women's side, Lukes won her second event championship in as many days and set a meet record in the process, posting a 1:52.45 in the 200-yard freestyle. Lukes,
Whitney Boehme (Thiensville),
Beth Ann Abraham (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Abby Strobel (Neenah) teamed up to bring home the 800-yard freestyle relay title with a meet record time of 7:37.64.
On Saturday the Pointer men's team recorded five more first-place finishes, securing the 13th conference title in school history while the women's team kept pace with defending champion UW-La Crosse but was unable to overcome their deficit.
Chase Gross added another win to his resume on Saturday, bringing home the 100-yard freestyle crown in another record time of 44.70. The win is the third time in his career he has finished first in the event. Rob Donisch turned in a championship performance in the 200-yard butterfly for the fourth straight season with a record time of 1:51.57, making him just the second individual in league records to achieve such a feat. Former Pointer Juan Cabrera (1990-93) was the first to accomplish the feat.
Also claiming first-place finishes on the day were Ian Girdley in the 200-yard backstroke and Brent Schwartz in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Pointer 400-yard freestyle relay team of Steve Lynam, Sam Davy, Matt Olp and Chase Gross also set a meet record on their way to earning a conference title, posting a time of 3:01.38.
For the women,
Annie Houlihan (Plymouth, MN) brought home the lone conference title on the day, but did so in another record time, finishing the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.82.
Three Pointes also took home major awards for their efforts. Chase Gross was named men's Swimmer of the Meet, the second straight season. The Pointers also made a complete sweep of the Scholar Athlete Awards, as Abby Strobel
took home the WIAC Judy Kruckman award and Rob Donisch took home the WIAC Max Sparger Scholar Athlete award.
