STEVENS POINT - UW-Stevens Point was whistled for 13 penalties on Friday evening and the Pipers of Hamline University added four goals in the third period, as they skated to a 6-3 victory over the Pointers on Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.
The Pointers drop to 1-3-0 overall while the win improves Hamline to 2-1 on the season.
Hamline struck first in the first, as Alex Contis put the Pipers on the board at the 3:16 mark of the opening period. The Pointers'
Travis Erstad (Stevens Point) answered for the Pointers just over three minutes later, knotting the game at one goal apiece.
In the second period, Hamline added a power play goal at the 18:08 mark, as Chris Berenguer found the back of the net off a Danny Vranek and Brian Arrigoni assist, giving the Pipers the 2-1 edge heading into the third.
In the third, the Pointers were hit with a five minute major just seconds into the period and two more penalties were added, giving Hamline the 5-3 advantage. The Pipers took advantage of the two man edge scoring at the 42 second mark of the third and Berenguer added his second goal of the game for the visitors at the 3:51 mark, giving Hamline a 4-1 advantage.
Erstad answered for the Pointers at the 3:51 mark with a power play goal, his second goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
After Jordan Van Glider added another goal for the Pipers,
Luke Nesper (Eagle River) added another power play goal for the Pointers at the 12:57 mark, pushing the score to 5-3. With time running out on a Pointer comeback, Hamline's Kyle Kurr put the nail in the coffin, scoring the even-handed goal at the 16:10 mark, giving the visitors the 6-3 edge.
Thomas Speer (Janesville) tallied 19 saves on the evening for the Pointers while
Nick Graves (Hewitt) added four in limited action in the third.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday when they host Bethel University at 7:30 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
