Coach Nichol Post-Game Interview
STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team lost its home opener to the University of St. Scholastica 4-2 on Friday evening after an hour and a half delay due to a power outage at K.B. Willett Arena. Action, originally scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., began at 9:04 p.m.
Both teams also had their offense on delay, as neither team was able to get on the board in the first period. That all changed in the second minute of the second period when the Saints' Brett Corcoran slammed the puck past Pointer goaltender
Thomas Speer (Janesville), making it a 1-0 Saints advantage.
The Saints received another goal four minutes later when Aaron Spotts pushed the puck past an outstretched Speer, making the score 2-0.
The Pointers received a spark in the 11th minute of the second period when
Travis Erstad (Stevens Point) scored a power play goal from the left side of the net past Saint goaltender Brennan Poderzay. The goal was assisted by
Garrett Suter (Madison).
The Saints wasted no time regaining their two goal advantage when Jeremy Davis whistled the puck past Speer, assisted by Tyler Miller and Spotts as the Saints took the 3-1 lead into the third period.
The Pointers fought valiantly to get back into the game, out shooting the Saints 14-9 in the final period.
Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI) recorded a Pointer goal at the 12:02 mark putting UWSP within one goal at 3-2.
The Pointers pulled their goalie in the last minutes in an effort to tie the game, but Riley Riddell of St. Scholastica broke through the Pointer defense and scored an empty netter with 0:33 left in the contest, giving the Saints the 4-2 edge and eventual victory.
The Pointers were led by Suter with six shots on goal.
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI) and
Nic Polaski (Delafield) added four shots apiece for the Pointers. Speer recorded 30 saves on the evening, including 15 in the first period.
The Pointers return to action on Halloween, Oct. 31 when they host the Saints for the second game of the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
