Weatherspoon won two National Championships as a member of the UWSP track and field team. In 1983, he won the long jump and the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This followed another All-American nod as a sixth-place finisher in 1982 in the long jump. He set the then-conference record in the indoor triple jump in 1983 with a jump of 48' 4.75". Weatherspoon owned the WIAC in 1983 winning the long jump and the triple jump at both the indoor and outdoor championships.
