RICHMOND, Ind. – Senior
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) hit a go-ahead three-pointer in the closing seconds as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (4-1) got a 70-67 win over Aurora (4-1) at the Melissa Johnson Classic.
Thomson's three gave her a game-high 27 points and tied her career high. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Fellow senior
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added a career-best 20 points. She also narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) was also in double figures with 12 points.
Thomson nailed a three and had seven early points as UWSP was ahead, 9-7. Loftus and Thomson each hit from beyond the arc late and UWSP led 19-14 after one.
Gawlitta had four points early in the second as the Pointers held the lead at 23-20.
Keira Maki (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) had four points and two late free throws by
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) gave the Pointers a 38-30 halftime lead.
Thomson scored eight of the 16 UWSP points in the third quarter and the Pointers had a 54-52 lead heading to the fourth.
Thomson hit a three with 4:08 remaining to break a 59-59 tie. Then with the game tied at 67-67 with 39 seconds left, Thomson buried a three with 2.5 seconds left to give UWSP the win.
The Pointers play host Earlham on Sunday (Nov. 24) to close out the tournament. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
