Pointers Rally Past CNU, Start Season 2-0 on East Coast

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (2-0) pulled off a monster rally from down two sets, knocking off No. 21 Christopher Newport (1-1) to start the season 2-0 at the Captains Classic on Friday. The Pointers opened the season with a three-set sweep of Randolph-Macon earlier in the day.
 
The two wins on Friday gave head coach Lyndsay Klapper her 100th career victory as head coach of the Pointers.
 
Junior Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led the way on the court with double-double in both matches. She racked up 19 kills and 19 digs in the opener against RMC. She had 19 more kills against CNU and added 10 digs.
 
Fellow junior Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) also had a double-double on the day with 34 assists and 13 digs versus RMC. She led the Pointers with a game-high 36 assists in the win over CNU.
 
Freshman Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) narrowly missed a double-double against CNU with 17 kills and nine digs. Fellow freshman Ryleigh Zeller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) posted a team-high 22 digs in both matches.
 
UWSP 3, RMC 0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-22)
Shaw had double-digit digs against RMC with 14 in the match. Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had nine kills. Michalske had three aces to lead the Pointers.
 
UWSP 3, CNU 2 (20-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-22, 17-15)
The Pointers fell into an early 7-2 hole in the first set. Summer Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) each had a kill as UWSP got within 9-7. Kopp had six kills and Shaw added three, but the Captains held on to take the first set.
 
Salettel had an early kill in set two, but UWSP trailed 14-2. Salettel had two more kills as did Shaw and Kopp as CNU rolled to a 2-0 lead.
 
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego), Salettel and Kopp had three successive kills as UWSP barged in front, 8-6, in the third set. Thomka and Shaw had back-to-back kills as the lead grew to 19-13. After CNU got within 22-20. Salettel and Shaw had kills to spark a 3-0 run to win the set.
Mosinski had two kills in a 6-0 run as UWSP took an 8-5 lead in the fourth set. Kopp served up a pair of aces in a five-point burst for an 18-13 advantage. Kopp added two more kills late as UWSP forced a decisive fifth set.
 
Shaw and Mosinski had a pair of kills each early in the fifth. Kopp added four kills as the set teetered back and forth with neither team leading by more than two. Shaw won the set as her kill secured the 17-15 victory.
 
The Pointers close out the opening weekend out east with an 11:00 a.m. ET match against Muskingum at the Captains Classic.
