UWSP Baseball Quartet Garners All-Region Selections

The UW-Stevens Point baseball team had four players on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Region 9 teams and two on the D3baseball.com All-Region 9 teams. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) earned nods on both teams while Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) and JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) picked up ABCA honors.

Comer garnered first-team honors from D3baseball and second team honors from ABCA. He led the Pointers in hitting this season at .373. He also topped the squad with 193 at-bats, 72 hits, 59 RBI and a .648 slugging percentage. An All-WIAC first team pick, Comer slugged 13 home runs on the year, six of which came in the NCAA Tournament. Comer had 21 multi-hit games, including three four-hit outings. In the NCAA Tournament Regional against Webster on May 20, he tied the program record with eight runs batted in that included a grand slam. Comer was the WIAC Athlete of the Week on April 25.
 
Paulsen was a second-team honoree from D3baseball and a third-team selection from ABCA. He was an All-WIAC first-team selection this season. Paulsen posted a 6-1 record in 10 starts with a 3.19 earned run average. He had a team-high 56 strikeouts on the season in 62.0 innings pitched. He had multiple strikeouts in 10 of his 12 appearances, including a career-high 11 against UW-Stout in a seven-inning complete game shutout on April 23.
 
Nelson earned second-team laurels from ABCA, the third career ABCA all-region nod. He was second on the team in hitting at .326 behind Comer. He led the team with 15 home runs, five of which left the yard in the NCAA Tournament. His 13 doubles were tied for the team lead and he was hit by a team-high 15 pitches. He drove in 55 runs on the season. Nelson capped his career as the program leader in hits (291), at-bats (871), runs (218), doubles (64), total bases (484), runs batted in (219) and games played (219).
 
Schultz picked up second-team honors from ABCA, his first career all-region nod. An All-WIAC first team pick this year, Schultz went 4-2 with a team-best 2.87 earned run average this season. He struck out 47 batters in 47.0 innings of work over 11 appearances. Opponents hit just .206 off Schultz this season, the best by any UWSP pitcher on the year.
 
The Pointers finished the season 33-14 and reached the third and decisive game of the NCAA Tournament Super Regional round. It was UWSP's third-straight 30-plus wins season under head coach Nat Richter.
