BROWN DEER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team moved up to first place after day three of the WIAC Championships with 597 points, 55 points ahead of the second-place team. The women remain in third place with 388 points, 142 points ahead of the fourth-place team.
Results
Owen Miller (Mequon, Wis./Mequon) got his second win of the competition in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.69. This is the second year in a row the Pointers have won this event.
Gus Grimstad (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) topped the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.20. Following closely behind in second place was Jacob Larsen (Albany, Wis./Oregon) with a time of 49.51. This is the 21st time in program history that the men have won the 100-yard butterfly at the WIAC Championships.
Larsen also took second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.72, finishing only .44 seconds behind the first-place finisher. Rhys Gibbs (Colgate, Wis./Arrowhead Union) touched the wall less than a second later at 51.33 to finish in third place.
The relay team of Will Lennertz (Muskego, Wis./Franklin), Peter McMahon (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), Jacob Biscan (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Miller finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.51, touching the wall only 0.2 seconds after the first-place finisher.
Cameron Harris (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) took third place in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:06.80, touching the wall less than 10 seconds after the first-place finisher.
McMahon placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.32.
On the women's side, Kasey Fris (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) came in second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.45, only 0.88 seconds behind the first-place finisher.
The relay team of Joy Vandenberg (Black Creek, Wis./Appleton North), Kyler Ernst (Fountain City, Wis./Luther), Fris and Kate Henson (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) took second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.31.
Vandenberg took third place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.54, finishing less than two seconds behind the first-place finisher.
Brooke Buck (Janesville, Wis./AZVA Academy) placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 1:55.78, touching the wall a little over two seconds after the first-place finisher.
Henson took seventh place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.77.
Abby Hopfensperger (Appleton, Wis./West) placed eighth in the one-meter dive with a score of 387.65.
Lissa Racette (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) finished in ninth place in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:57.68.
The Pointers will compete in the last day of the WIAC Championships on Saturday (Feb. 17). Preliminary races are set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
