UWSP Swimming Men, Women Finish Strong to Win Wheaton Invitational

WHEATON, Ill. -- The UW-Stevens Point swimming and diving team resumed action today at the Wheaton Invite. The UWSP men won with a score of 975.50, while the UWSP women were victorious with a score of 903.50.
 
Event Results I Team Scores

The top finisher for the men was Gus Grimstad (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) who made it back-to-back days with a first-place finish, winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.67 and finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.57.

Owen Miller (Mequon, Wis./Mequon) continued to excel in the 50-yard freestyle, taking first with a blazing time of 20.56.  Teammate Camden Barwick (Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) logged a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.94.

The relay unit of Miller, Peter McMahon (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), Grimstad and Barwick finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.37.

Jacob Larsen (Albany, Wis./Oregon) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.43.

Ryan Trantham (Mackinaw, Ill./Deer Creek Mackinaw) finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:05.00.

The team of Scott Jenn (Madison, Wis./Memorial), Will Nicol (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port), Kody Hellenbrand (Madison, Wis./East) and McMahon took second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:34.10.

Ryan Trantham (Mackinaw, Ill./Deer Creek Mackinaw) and McMahon each added third-place finishes. Trantham finished third in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:16.85 while McMahon placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.52.
 
The top finisher for the women was Kasey Fris (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) who built off her day one performance by tacking on a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.70 and second-place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:42.14.

The relay team of Kyler Ernst (Fountain City, Wis./Luther), Mimi Trenary (Moline, Ill./Moline), Joy Vandenberg (Black Creek, Wis./Appleton North) and Rose Hansen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) logged a win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.41.

Hansen took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.26.

Freshman Hannah Scherwinski (Kenosha, Wis.) went the distance for the Pointers with a first-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:29.77.

Vandenberg registered second-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.00 and 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.50.

Brooke Buck (Janesville, Wis./AZVA Academy) logged a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.90.

Carolyn Powell (Olney, Ill./Richland County) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.52.

The unit of Buck, Fris, Ernst and Hansen tacked on a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.68.

The Pointers announced that Senior Tiana Cachuela (Oakdale, Minn./Park) was their female swimmer of the meet. Cachuela wrapped up her collegiate career as she will be graduating this month. On day one of the Invite, she logged a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 2:15.52.
