Pointers Dominate UW-Oshkosh in First Meet of 2023

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point swimming and diving team won a combined 27 events against Oshkosh to start off the second half of their season. The women won 146 to 69 and the men won every event to finish with a score of 148 to 79.

Results

The men were led by Gus Grimstad (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah), who won three individual events on the day. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Grimstad finished two seconds faster than the second-place finisher to top the event. Grimstad then went on to win the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.05 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.72, finishing a full minute faster than the second-place finisher.

Cameron Harris (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) took first in two events, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Harris clocked a time of 2:19.29 finishing 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. In the 100-yard backstroke, Harris finished with a time of 56.35.

Kody Hellenbrand (Madison, Wis./East) topped both the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.56 and the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 53.22.

Evan Plummer (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) won the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive with scores of 263.45 and 284.75 respectively.

Ethan Otto (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) won the 1650-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 18:00.66, over three minutes faster than the second-place finisher.

Caiden Kuehn (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) took first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.33.

Rhys Gibbs (Colgate, Wis./Arrowhead Union) topped the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.46.

Will Lennertz (Muskego, Wis./Franklin) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.14, touching the wall only 0.02 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Jacob Larsen (Albany, Wis./Oregon) took first place in the 200-yard IM with a personal-best time of 1:59.61.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Larsen, Sawyer Stevens (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly), Joe Jensen (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) and Peter McMahon (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) finished first with a time of 1:40.61.

The relay team of Jacob Biscan (Edina, Minn./Edina), Otto, Brayden Coudron (Winona, Minn./Winona) and Ryan Trantham (Mackinaw, Ill./Deer Creek Mackinaw) won with a time of 1:31.53.

On the women's side, Brooke Buck (Janesville, Wis./AZVA Academy) topped both the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.10 and the 200-yard IM with a personal-best time of 2:19.38.

Joy Vandenberg (Black Creek, Wis./Appleton North) won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.64.

Kasey Fris (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) took first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.28.

Kyler Ernst (Fountain City, Wis./Luther) won the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:01.14.

Signe Alger (Saint Peter, Minn./Saint Peter) topped the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:15.37.

Paige Anderson (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake Area) took first in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:30.23.

Carolyn Powell (Olney, Ill./Richland County) won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:40.76.

Tiana Cachuela (Oakdale, Minn./Park) topped the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.80.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Fris, Kate Henson (Morrison, Ill./Morrison), Vandenberg and Rose Hansen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) won with a time of 1:53.73.

The relay team of Vandenberg, Fris, Ernst and Buck won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.58.

The Pointers will head to Northern Michigan University for a dual on Saturday (Jan. 14). The meet is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
