ABCA Names Five Pointers to All-Region Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five more UW-Stevens Point baseball players landed All-Region 9 honors as the American Baseball Coaches of America (ABCA) announced its teams on Tuesday afternoon (May 31). Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) picked up his second first-team selection of the day. Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) joined him on the first team with Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) garnering second-team honors. Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) and Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) collected third-team honors.

Simmons puts another honor in his portfolio and second first-team all-region nod of the day. The WIAC Position Player of the Year and a repeat All-WIAC first team selection, Simmons set school records for home runs (20) and walks (43) this season. He hit .366 with a team-best 62 RBI this year and is second on the squad with 13 stolen bases. He hit two triples this season to tie for the WIAC all-time lead with 16 career three-baggers and has racked up 409 total bases in his career, a school record. Simmons was named WIAC Athlete of the Week on May 10 after hitting six home runs over eight games to close out the regular season.
 
Luedtke adds a first-team honor after a third-team selection this morning. He is second on the team with a .380 average and has slugged 14 home runs, three in the Super Regional clincher. His 59 RBI are second on the team as are his 13 doubles. He has started all 48 games as UWSP's designated hitter and is tied for the team lead with 71 base hits. He was an All-WIAC honorable mention pick this season.
 
Ferry grabs his second second-team selection of the day. He is 5-0 with six saves this season and a team-best 1.89 ERA. Ferry holds a 43-to-4 strikeouts-to-walks ratio this season over 33.1 innings in 18 appearances. He also earned WIAC Athlete of the Week honors on May 10 after going 2-0 with two saves in four outing the final week of the regular season. Ferry was also a repeat All-WIAC first team honoree this season.
 
Comer gets his second-straight all-region nod from ABCA after being named to the second team in 2021. He hit .355 in 48 starts at third base. Comer is tied for the team-lead with 71 hits, nine of which were home runs. He has driven in 54 and scored 51 runs. Comer is tied for third on the team with 12 steals and is second on the team with 200 at-bats primarily in the clean up spot. He was named to the All-WIAC first team for the second-consecutive season this year.
 
Nelson also lands his second-straight all-region selection from ABCA after second-team laurels in 2021. A .340 hitter with 48 starts in centerfield, Nelson became the UWSP all-time leader in doubles when he hit his 50th career two-bagger against North Central in the Regional clincher. He is second on the team with 58 runs scored and leads the team with 14 stolen bases. Nelson has 10 home runs and 13 doubles this year. He was an All-WIAC pick for the fourth time in his career this season and was the WIAC Athlete of the Week on April 12.
 
UWSP heads to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to begin the College World Series on Friday (June 3). The Pointers open against the reigning National Champions, Salisbury, at 1:15 p.m.
