MADISON, Wis. – For the first time since the 1996-97 season, the UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team finished third at the WIAC Championships.
Results
All three doubles pairs for UWSP finished third in the bracket on Sunday. UWSP's No. 1 doubles team of
Quinlyn Mack (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and
Tristin Jantz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) earned an 8-3 win over Stout.
The duo of
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) won a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5), over a La Crosse pair at No. 2 doubles.
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Grace Henes (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) also beat a pair from UWL, 8-5, to take third at No. 3 doubles.
Jantz took third at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over UWL.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) also took third in singles with a 1-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory over UWEC at No. 3.
Maya Kunze (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) also needed a super breaker to secure a third-place finish at No. 5 singles. She won 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 over UWEC.
Mack, Covek and
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) took fourth at No. 1, 4 and 6 singles, respectively.
The third-place finish by UWSP is the highest since the 1996-97 season and just the fifth time since 1986-87 that UWSP has finished in the top-3. Koepp was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
