Swimming and Diving Opens Season with 21 Event Victories

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point swimming and diving team opened its season at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday.  The Pointers won 21 of the 26 events contested. No team scores were kept.

For the women, UWSP's relay team of Signe Alger (Saint Peter, Minn./Saint Peter), Maddie Starr (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Grace Gallagher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal West) and Haley Dees (Normal, Ill./West) posted a time of 1:59.94 to win the 200-yard medley relay.

Anna Pilecky (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) won the 1000-yard freestyle by nearly 40 seconds with a time of 10:48.96. Pilecky also claimed the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.16, more than 15 seconds faster than second place.

Rose Hanson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and Dees tied for first place in the 50-yard freestyle, both touching at 25.98.

Starr also won the 200-yard IM by more than six seconds, clocking in at 2:25.02.  She also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.40.

Sydney Richetto (Wausau, Wis./East) clocked in at 57.40 in the 100-yard freestyle to win the event.

Kaylee Benson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) lead a quartet of top finishers in the 100-yard backstroke winning with a time of 1:04.63.

Richetto, Dees, Pilecky and Benson finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:53.67.

Abby Hopfensperger (Appleton, Wis./West) won the one-meter diving event with a score of 211.05.  McKenzie Lange (West Bend, Wis./West Bend West) won the three-meter event with a score of 221.10.

On the men's side, Jake Larsen, William Buhler (Racine, Wis./William Horlick), Joe Jensen (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) and Payton Kilian (Coon Rapids, Minn./Spring Lake Park) teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.11, just 0.72 seconds ahead of second place.

Kilian won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.83, pacing the Pointers which took the top-5 spots in the event.  He also took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.96.

Buhler took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.47, over five seconds faster than the runner-up.

Sam Young (Verona, Wis./Middleton) posted a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:57.11, more than seven seconds faster than the runner-up.

Kody Hellenbrand (Madison, Wis./East) took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.51, five seconds faster than teammate Matthew Gorney (Oswego, Ill./Oswego).  Hellenbrand also earned the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.37.

Alec Jeffers (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) won the 100-yard backstroke by more than two seconds over teammate Larsen with a victorious time of 53.45.

Brady Carrigan (Rosemont, Minn./Rosemont) and Benjamin Schutt (McFarlane, Wis./McFarlane) were the only two men's divers at the meet.  Carrigan won the one-meter event with a score of 229.00 while Schuet won the three-meter dive with a score of 168.90.
 
The Pointers will host UW-Whitewater in the home opener of Saturday (Feb. 13). A start time has not been established.
