MADISON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team closed out the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) with a fourth-place team finish.
Results
The highlight of the day was UWSP's No. 1 doubles team of
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown). The duo upset the two-seed team from UW-La Crosse in the third-place match with an 8-7 (7-5) win in the tiebreaker.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) also placed third at No. 2 singles taking down the three-seed from UW-Eau Claire in the third-place match. She won the opening set 6-1 before dropping the second set 6-4. In the super-breaker, Leithold prevailed by a 10-2 margin.
Kaitlyn Hess (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) took fourth in No. 4 singles, but not before forcing a super-breaker in the third-place match. She rallied from a set one loss to take the second set, 6-2. But in the super-breaker, she came up short, 10-5.
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) forced a super-breaker in her second round match. She won the opening set by a 6-3 final. In the second set, she was shut out, 6-0, and dropped the super-breaker. She then placed fourth in the bracket.
Covek forced a super-breaker in the fifth-place match at No. 1 singles after earning a 7-5 set one win. In the super-breaker, though, she fell 10-3 to place sixth.
Koepp and
Kaylee Woelfel (Plymouth,Wis/Plymouth) all placed fourth at No. 3 and 6 singles, respectively. Koepp won six points in each of her matches on the day.
UWSP's doubles teams of Hess and
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Grace Henes (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) and
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) each placed fourth and No. 2 and 3, respectively. Hess and Leithold fell by and 8-4 final while Henes and Leithold dropped an 8-3 decision.
Woelfel was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team following the competition.
The Pointers fall season concludes with a program record 16 wins. The fourth-place finish in the final standings is the highest for UWSP since the 2009-10 season.
