Box Score DE PERE, Wis. - Despite outshooting the Green Knights 29-23, the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team fell to St. Norbert College 3-2 at the Cornerstone Community Center Saturday evening.
Alex Grubs and
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig)Â scored for the Pointers (8-5-2) in the first and third periods, but fell short to the Green Knights (4-10-1) who scored in each period to hang on for a 3-2 victory.
At 4:08 of the first period, St. Norbert took advantage of a Pointer's tripping penalty as Selena Stromer found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. The Pointers got off just four shots in the opening period, but
Alex Grubbs (Minong, WI/Spooner), assisted by
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig) and
Maddie Schlossmacher (Roseville, MN/Roseville), evened the score at the 14:13 minute mark. Pointers' goal tender,
Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West) had a busy first period seeing 14 of her 23 total shots in the first period.
UWSP challenged St. Norbert's goal tender Brianna 11 times in the second period, but were unable to break the crease. At 2:42, the Green Knights took the outright lead with the the goal credited to Lisa Lenell.
St. Norbert tacked on another goal in the third period at 8:17 for a two goal advantage. Pointers' Lemirande, assisted by Schlossmacher and
Logan Harper (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township), cut the lead to just one goal at 15:31. Down a goal with less than two minutes to go, UWSP pulled Fowle for an extra hand, but were unable to pull off a comeback falling 3-2.
The Pointers return to action on Jan. 17 as they host UW-Superior. The Pointers and Yellowjackets are set for a 7 p.m. face off at Ice Hawks Arena.Â
