CEDAR RAPIS, Iowa - Saturday night was a night to remember for the UW-Stevens Point Wrestling program, as Logan Hermsen (Amherst Junction, WI/Amherst) became the sixth national champion in Pointers program's history. 

The Amherst Junction, Wis. native defeated Wartburg's Nicholas Michael in sudden victory-1 cap off his junior season with a national title at 165-pounds. Hermsen's season closes with a 28-4 record in Division III.

Hermsen is the sixth national champion in program history.

Hermsen used a late third period takedown to tie the national match at 3-3 and send it into overtime.

"I knew he was tired and all I needed was one good shot," said Hermsen of his thoughts going into the final 30 seconds of regulation. "Once I got his leg there was no doubt in my mind that I was finishing the takedown".

Hermsen took the first shot in overtime, which proved to be the only attempt needed to score the winning takedown.

"I knew I was going back to the same shot I scored on at the end of regulation because I knew he was tired," said Hermsen. 

Hermsen's title gave the Pointers 19 team points at the 2016 championships, good for a 19th place team finish, its highest since 2009 when the Pointers finished 17th.
