STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point tallied seven victories on Thursday evening to down the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire 29-9 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action in Berg Gym.
Results The Pointers'
Ben Vosters (Hatley, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood) earned a forfeit victory at 125 pounds, putting the Pointers in front 6-0.
Michael Bannach (Wrightstown, WI/Wrightstown) put UWSP in front 9-0 with a hard-fought 7-0 victory over Eau Claire's Scott Worlund.
At 141 pounds,
Jared Kust (Shawano, WI/Shawano) pushed his record to 25-5 with a 3-1 win in the third sudden victory frame, pushing the Pointers' team advantage to 12-0.
A 14-1 major victory by
Anthony Friese (Hortonville, WI/Waupaca) at 157 pounds and a 4-3 squeaker by
Logan Hermsen (Amherst Junction, WI/Amherst) at 165 pounds stretched the Pointers' lead to 25-0.
The first of three UWEC victories on the evening came at 174, where Matthew Laugen earned a 5-3 victory over
Dylan Diebitz (West Allis, WI/Central). Mat Rieckhoff added another Blugold victory at 184 pounds with a 4-1 decision over
Anthony Rottier (Little Suamico, WI/Pulaski).
At 197 pounds,
Kane Seubert (Marshfield, WI/Marshfield) posted a 14-6 major decision over Eau Claire's Cecil Philson, capping the scoring on the night for the Pointers, giving UWSP the 29-6 edge.
At 285, the Pointers'
Dominic Gunderson (Hortonville, WI/Shiocton), who normally wrestles at 184, nearly pulled off the most improbable win of the evening, narrowly falling to UWEC's Justin Karkula 10-9 on riding time. Gunderson held multiple leads in the contest before Karkula was able to tie and ride him out for the victory.
UW-Stevens Point (6-9, 3-1 WIAC) next travels to the Pete Wilson Invitational on Jan. 30-31, hosted by Wheaton (Ill.). The next dual for the Pointers is the final conference match-up of the year, a Feb. 6 showdown with UW-La Crosse in La Crosse. The Pointers' final home dual of the season comes Feb. 20 against Augsburg.
