Ross fires women's soccer to first win of the season

Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Jillian Ross (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) scored twice and assisted on another goal as the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team picked up its first win of the year with a 4-1 non-conference victory over St. Olaf on Wednesday afternoon at the Point Soccer Bowl.

Box Score

The Pointers (1-2) scored three goals in a 16-minute span of the first half to take command and eventually build a 4-0 lead early in the second half. Kajsa Brindley scored the final goal of the game for St. Olaf (0-2-0) with a close-range finish in the 59th minute.

Abbie Ullrich (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) opened the scoring on an assist from Ross in the 20th minute and Ross doubled the Pointers' lead less than three minutes later. Ross' first goal came as the junior curled a right-footed shot into the far right corner of the goal off a cutback from Sarah Vitale (River Falls, WI/River Falls).

Freshman Kara Herr (Schafer, MN/Chisago Lakes) made it 3-0 in the 36th minute with her first collegiate goal. Vitale was again the provider as she played a ball in behind the Ole defense and Herr rounded the goalie and finished into the empty net.

Ross scored her second goal of the game in the 51st minute on a 25-yard shot from straight on that flew over the goalie and under the crossbar. Mary-Kate Schiffer (Palatine, IL/William Fremd) set up Ross' second goal after hitting the post from a similar distance earlier in the game.

Despite being outshot 15-11 in the game overall, the Pointers managed to get nine shots on goal to the Oles' six. Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest) made three saves in the opening half before being replaced by Morgan Voigt (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander) in the second half. St. Olaf's Lindsay Dolan made five saves in the contest.

UW-Stevens Point travels to Iowa this weekend for games against Wartburg at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Luther  at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7.
