Box Score

Linfield (37-7) broke a 2-2 tie with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat UW-Stevens Point (32-13) for the second time in the regional. The Wildcats advance to the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis. on May 23-27.

The loss ends the season for the Pointers and the UWSP careers of an eight-man senior class that finished 134-49 overall and made three NCAA postseason appearances. With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats scored the game-winning run on a two-out double by shortstop Corey VanDomelen, who was 3-for-4, that hit the left-field line. The hit drove in Eric Lawson from second after he reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Linfield added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Jo Carroll down the right-field line. The hit came off reliever Tyler Flood (Madison, WI/La Follette) but the run was charged to Frederick, who started the frame.

The Pointers had the tying run at the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to push any runs across against D3baseball.com 2013 Pitcher of the Year Chris Haddeland, who made his first relief appearance of the season and earned the save.

Linfield opened the scoring by scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third and two outs, the Wildcats scored both runs on a passed ball and an error on the ensuing throw.

As it had throughout the regional, UW-Stevens Point battled back to knot the score at 2-2 with single runs in the sixth and seventh. A two-out single by Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) scored Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH), who had two of UWSP's five hits, from third in the sixth.

In the seventh, Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) scored on a throwing error by reliever Joe Stevick on a chopper off the bat of Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette). After the error, the Pointers had runners on second and third with one out but were unable to take the lead.
