Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) had a pair of three-hit games as the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against St. Norbert 10-1 and 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon at University Field.
No. 2 UW-Stevens Point 10, St. Norbert 1 | Box The Pointers (17-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and scored five teams in the seventh to break the game open.
Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) got the scoring started with a run-scoring single through the right side, scoring Kranz. Three batters later,
Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette) plated two more with a single to right center.
Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) and Kranz each had RBI doubles as UWSP scored single runs in the second and fourth innings.
In the five-run seventh,
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH),
Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown),
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) and Kranz all drove in runs. All 10 UWSP runs came off St. Norbert starter Travis Mason, who last seven innings but game up 14 hits.
On the mound,
Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) held the Green Knights (10-9) to one run in seven innings of work. The senior allowed four hits and two walks, while fanning eight.
Kranz and McHugh were both 3-for-4, while Spetz, Carlson and Rose each had two hits. McHugh's hitting streak ended at 18 games after an 0-for-4 second game.
No. 2 UW-Stevens Point 10, St. Norbert 7 | Box The Green Knights built a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half but the Pointers came back in the late innings to take game two. Four of the five St. Norbert runs in the first two innings were unearned off UWSP starter
Zach Wendorf (Merrill, WI/Merrill) after the Pointer committed three early errors.
UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the second and third innings to cut the deficit to a run after three. Rose and
Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West) knocked in runs with singles, while Spetz and Gregorich also earned RBIs for the Pointers early.
After St. Norbert bumped its lead to 6-4 in the fifth, UW-Stevens Point scored the next five runs to take the lead for good. The rally was completed in the bottom of the seventh, when the Pointers scored four runs on five hits and an error.
Carlson and Gregorich started the inning with back-to-back singles and Steldt followed with a RBI double down the left field line. Two batter later, Spetz doubled to right center, scoring Rose and Steldt to make it 8-6. Kranz capped the rally by singling to right, scoring Spetz. Kranz raised his season average to .508 with another 3-for-4 game at the plate.
The Green Knights scored once in the eighth but the Pointers got it back on
Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon)'s team-leading fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the frame.
Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) earned the win in relief of Wendorf, who gave two six runs, two earned in 4.1 innings. Prebelski struck out four over 2.2 innings of work before giving way to
Luke Watson (Appleton, WI/Xavier) for the six-out save.
UW-Stevens Point returns to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play this weekend, hosting UW-Superior in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13 at University Field. Games start at noon both days.
