Watson, Frederick go the distance in sweep of Washington & Jefferson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. – Luke Watson (Appleton, WI/Xavier) and Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) each tossed complete games as the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team swept Washington & Jefferson 6-1 and 8-0 on Friday afternoon at Pat Thomas Stadium.

Frederick logged his second complete game in as many starts by giving up eight hits and one run in seven frames of work against Washington & Jefferson (6-7). The senior struck out six batters in the game against just two walks.

Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) homered for the second game in a row and fourth time this season to stake the Pointers (10-1) to an early 2-0 lead in the first. UW-Stevens Point had just five hits but made the most of them, turning them into six runs.

After the Presidents got within 2-1 with a second-inning run, the Pointers pulled away in the fourth with three runs. UW-Stevens Point recorded a single hit in the inning but scratched across runs on an error, a hit batter and an RBI single by Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas).

Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) drove in the sixth UWSP run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth for his second RBI of the game. Spetz, Coady, McHugh, Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) and Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) each had one hit.

Watson held the Presidents to just four hits and one walk in a complete game shutout and struck out five batters in the process. Coady and Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette) each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Pointers  offensively.

Hanke started the scoring for UW-Stevens Point with a solo home run in the second inning, his second of the season. The Pointers then added four more in the third inning on a two-run double by Coady and run-scoring singles by Kranz and Carlson.

UWSP tacked on three more in the seventh to cap a 13-hit game. McHugh, Kranz and Carlson each drove in runs in the seventh for the Pointers, who finished their trip 10-1.

UW-Stevens Point returns to Wisconsin to face Ripon in a road doubleheader on Sunday, March 30 at noon and 2 p.m.
