Six-run sixth give Pointers victory over Wheaton (Mass.)

Box Score LEESBURG, Fla. – The No. 5 UW-Stevens Point baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season, rolling past the Lyons of Wheaton College (Mass.) 8-2 at Pat Thomas Stadium.

Scoreless through the first five innings, the Pointers erupted for six runs in the sixth inning, all coming with two outs, to break the game open. Kody McHugh (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee) started a string of four consecutive singles, giving the Pointers two runs.

After a walk by Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West), Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) drove in a pair with a single down the left field line. Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) drove in two more runs to give the Pointers the 6-0 edge.

The Pointers tacked on two more runs in the eighth on a Hanke double and a wild pitch.

The Lyons added two in the bottom of the ninth but Nash Bell (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) was able to close out the victory for the Pointers.

JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) threw seven scoreless innings, scattering six hits, striking out eight. Tyler Flood (Madison, WI/La Follette) and Bell each pitched an inning in relief.

Hanke finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI while Spetz drove in a pair for the Pointers offense.

The Pointer return to action Sunday, March 16 with a doubleheader against Anderson (Ind.)
