Pointers finish third at 2014 WIAC Wrestling Championship

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team went 2-1 on Saturday to finish in third place at the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championship, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at Mitchell Hall.

Two-time defending champion UW-Whitewater secured its third title with a 35-9 victory over UW-La Crosse in the championship match.

The Pointers, seeded fourth after a 2-3 mark in conference action this season, opened the day against fifth-seeded UW-Platteville. Lance Fabry (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon), Jared Kust (Shawano, WI/Shawano), John Roycraft (Omro, WI/Winneconne), Jamey Simmons (Abbotsford, WI/Abbotsford), Bill Langford (Westosha, WI/Westosha Central), Dustin Wozniak (Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd) and Jordan Koranda (Marshfield, WI/Marshfield) tallied victories for the Pointers who rolled to the 33-12 win.

In the second round the Pointers ran into top-seeded and second-ranked UW-Whitewater. Kust won his match at 141 via a 10-9 decision and Simmons won by fall (6:52), but it was not enough as UWW rolled to a 38-9 victory.

The Pointers closed out the day in the tournament's third place match against UW-Oshkosh. Four straight victories by Ryan Osse (Wheat Ridge, CO/Wheat Ridge), Fabry, Kust and Roycraft to start the match gave the Pointers a lead, but the Titans answered with three straight victories including a pin by defending national champion Nazar Kulchytskyy at 157, going back in front.

But the Langford and Wozniak answered with major decisions to give the Pointers the lead and victory in a close one, 20-18.

Kust finished the championship 3-0 while Simmons, Fabry, Roycraft and Wozniak each went 2-1.

Fabry was honored as UW-Stevens Point's representative to the All-Sportsmanship team.

UW-Oshkosh's Kulchytskyy was named the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet, UW-Whitewater's Tim Fader received the Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year award and UW-Eau Claire's Luke Ortscheid claimed the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete award.

Qualification for the NCAA Division III Championship is based on super regional competition held March 1. UW-Stevens Point will join UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater in a regional hosted by Wabash College (Ind.). The 2014 National Championship will be held March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
