STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Gunnar Hjorth (Oswego, IL/Yorkville) finished as the runner-up at 157-pounds to pace the UW-Stevens Point wrestling team at the 2014 Pointer Open Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Quandt Fieldhouse.
UWSP ResultsHjorth posted victories over Mark Choinski, Pierce Holtfreter (Concordia Wis.) and Mark Savenok (Wheaton) to advance to the title match before falling to UW-Madision freshman Jared Scharenbrock. Savenok is a returning All-American and is currently ranked fifth nationally.
Logan Hermsen (Amherst Junction, WI/Amherst) posted a third place finish at 165-pounds, posting victories over Elmhurst's Nick DiNardo and Ben THome before falling in the semifinals. Hermsen battled back to post a victory in the consolation semifinals and won a 4-3 decision over Mitchell Fucile in the third place match.
Ben Vosters (Hatley, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood),
David Granatelli (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) and
Cody Nielsen (Oconto Falls, WI/Oconto Falls) each posted fourth place finishes at their respective weight classes while
Alex Heiden (Stratford, WI/Stratford) and
Dylan Diebitz (West Allis, WI/Central) finished in fifth. Rounding out the place-finishers for UWSP,
Trevor Spears (Muscoda, WI/Riverdale) posted a sixth place showing at 141-pounds.
The Pointers (1-0) next face Concordia (Wis.) in a nonconference dual on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in Mequon. Action gets underway at 7 p.m .
