Pointers finish 1-2 at Border Brawl

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team fell to two top-10 ranked teams on Saturday but picked up a win over Elmhurst College to finish the 2014 UW-Whitewater Border Brawl 1-2.

The Pointers opened the day against second-ranked Concordia-Moorhead. Jered Kust, Jamey Simmons (Abbotsford, WI/Abbotsford) and Dustin Wozniak (Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd) tallied victories for the Pointers, but the Cobbers were too much, pulling away for the 27-10 victory. Simmons victory at 157 came against 10th-ranked Kyle LeDuc of Concordia. Results

The Pointers next faced eighth-ranked Olivet. Lance Fabry (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon),Simmons, Wozniak and Koranda all tallied victories but again it was not enough to get past the Comets, as the Pointers fell 24-13. Results

In the final dual of the day, the Pointers downed Elmhurst behind victories from Ryan Osse (Wheat Ridge, CO/Wheat Ridge), Lance Fabry (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon), Simmons, Bill Langford (Westosha, WI/Westosha Central), Dylan Diebitz (West Allis, WI/Central) and Koranda. Results

Simmons finished the day 3-0 while Koranda finished 2-1, with his only loss coming to fourth-ranked Cody Kasprick of Concordia-Moorhead. His victory against Elmhurst came against sixth-ranked Danny Vargas of Elmhurst.

Also in action during the day in flight matches, David Granatelli (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) finished fourth at 133-pounds, Anthony Friese (Hortonville, WI/Waupaca) was fourth at 157-pounds, Ben Thome (Stevens Point, WI/Oconto) and Dan Irwin (Pulaski, WI/Pulaski) finished first and third, respectively, at 165, Kane Seubert (Marshfield, WI/Marshfield) was fourth at 184, and Steve Asmondy (Germantown, WI/Germantown) was second at 197.

The Pointers return to the mat for the Pete Wilson Invite, hosted by Wheaton College Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in Wheaton, Ill.
