WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team wrapped up action at the 2014 Whitehill Duals on Saturday with a narrow 17-16 defeat at the hands of The College of New Jersey and a challange match defeat at the hands of host Lycoming 21-14.
Day One Results
The Pointers finished 2-3 overall at the prestigious dual tournament.
The 25th-ranked Pointers (6-8) actually battled the Lions to a 16-16 tie after the 10 matches, but TCNJ was credited with the victory via the tiebreak, a 58-57 edge in total match points.
Back-to-back victories by
David Granatelli (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) and
Lance Fabry (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon) put the Pointers in front 7-3 and a
Jamey Simmons (Abbotsford, WI/Abbotsford) win gave the Pointers the 10-6 edge midway through the dual.
TCNJ posted three straight victories to retake the lead, 16-10.
Dustin Wozniak (Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd) and
Jordan Koranda (Marshfield, WI/Marshfield) posted victories to close out the match and tie the score at 16-16.
In a challange match-up against Lycoming, the Pointers received wins from Granatelli, Simmons,
Logan Hermsen (Amherst Junction, WI/Amherst) and
Dustin Wozniak (Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd), but fell just short, as a pin by the Warriors at 285 sealed the 21-14 victory.
Wozniak finished the weekend 5-0 and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
The Pointers return to action on Jan. 22 with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up against the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
