LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team used a pair of stellar pitching performances on Saturday afternoon to tally two wins against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse. The Pointers won the opener 5-1 behind a complete game six-hitter from
Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) and won the nightcap 10-1 behind a stellar performance from
Ben Messenger (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port).
Game 1
An RBI single by
Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) in the first and a
Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) RBI double in the second gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead. The offense plated two more runs in the fifth with a
Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) home run, his ninth of the season, and another in the sixth to take the 5-1 advantage.
Herbst allowed just six hits on the afternoon, striking out four on his way to improving his record to 8-1 on the year.
Game 2
Brandon Kanz supplied the offense in game two, first with a three-run double in the third inning as part of a five run inning, and then with an RBI single in the seventh.
Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) added another RBI hit in the seventh to push the UWSP lead to 9-1 after seven. Another run in the ninth by the Pointers sealed the nine-run victory.
Messenger, not to be outdone by Herbst's performance, threw 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits, allowing just one run and struck out two.
Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) came in to close out the game, pitching the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
The Pointers (28-8, 15-5 WIAC) and Eagles (16-17, 8-11 WIAC) return to action on Sunday. First pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
