APPLETON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team's dramatic run for the NCAA Division III 2013 World Series title came to an end Monday afternoon with an 8-1 loss to the University of Southern Maine.

Both teams entered Monday's game with a 2-1 record in the double-elimination tournament.

The Pointers (41-11) got on the board first when Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) led off the fourth inning by reaching on an error and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Schilter tagged up and advanced to third on a fly ball off the bat of Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton), and Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) gave UWSP a 1-0 lead with an RBI single up the middle.

The Huskies quickly responded with five runs in the home half of the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Matt Verrier.

The Pointers won their first two games of the World Series in improbable fashion. In its first game, UWSP rallied from a 5-0 deficit against Manchester University (Ind.) and Bryton Guckenberg (Trego, MT/Lincoln County) hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The following day the Pointers trailed Kean University 3-1 in the eighth inning, but an RBI groundout by Guckenberg and a two-run single off the bat of Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) gave UWSP a 4-3 win.

The Pointers lost to Linfield College, ranked No. 1 by D3baseball.com, 5-3 on Sunday, forcing a loser-goes-home match with Southern Maine on Monday.

UWSP set several team and individual records during its course to the program's fifth World Series appearance. Douglas finishes his career with 249 hits, surpassing the previous mark of 243. Also, the team's 41 wins is a single-season best, topping the 38 wins in 2005.
