WHITEWATER, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team posted a 6-3 win on Saturday night over UW-LaCrosse at the 2013 WIAC Championships and will play on Sunday afternoon for the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Box Score
Pointers' hurler
Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) (9-1) scattered six hits and six walks over seven strong innings to earn the victory.
Luke Watson (Appleton, WI/Xavier) recorded the final two outs of the ninth inning to notch his fifth save.
In the second inning a lead-off single by
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) got things going, and the Pointers (34-8) batted around to put four runs on the scoreboard.
It was all the run support the UWSP pitching staff would need as the team now awaits the winner of Game 5 of the conference championships.
The winner of the UW-Whitewater vs. UW-LaCrosse contest (Sunday, 10:00 a.m.) will advance to take on the Pointers at 1:00 p.m.
A win by UWSP (34-8) in that matchup would earn an automatic qualifier bid, with a winner-take-all Game 7 at 4:00 p.m. on the horizon should the Pointers come up short in their early afternoon tilt.
The games are all being played on campus at UW-Whitewater's baseball complex.
