Pointers complete weekend sweep over UW-Platteville

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team completed a four-game sweep of UW-Platteville when it won both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, 6-2 and 5-4.

Weather conditions forced the Pioneers to host the Pointers at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater, Wis.

Game 1 (Box Score)

Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) belted a three-run home run and Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) was dominant in his first start of the season as the Pointers (12-3, 4-0 WIAC) topped Platteville, 6-2.

The Pioneers (5-15, 0-6 WIAC) got on the board first when Jon Lewerke connected on a two-run home run in the second inning.

The Pointers cut the deficit in half in the third inning when Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) tripled to right field and Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) drove him in with a single up the middle.

Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) led off the sixth inning with a double to centerfield and advanced to third on a groundout by Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West). Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, easily scoring Gregorich and tying the game 2-2.

Still in the sixth inning, Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) singled and Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) walked to set up Gerber's blast over the right field wall.

After allowing two hits in the second inning, Herbst held the Pioneers hitless through the rest of his start.  Herbst pitched 7.1 innings and fanned 12 to earn the win.

Game 2 (Box Score)

The UWSP bats were silent through the first five innings, but once again Gerber provided the clutch hit that brought the offense to life. Trailing 1-0 with two runners on in the top of the sixth inning, Gerber belted a double to centerfield to give UWSP a 2-1.

On the very next pitch Coady tripled to right-center field, increasing the Pointer lead to 3-1.

The Pioneers fought back and put two runs on the board to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West) broke the tie when he singled to right field with runners on the corners in the seventh inning.

UWSP added an insurance run when Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) singled in Coady from second base to put the Pointers ahead 5-3 in the eighth inning.

UWSP starting pitcher Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) allowed just two runs through 5.2 innings while striking out four.

Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) and Tyler Flood (Madison, WI/La Follette) combine to allow just one earned run in 3.1 innings out of the bullpen.

The Pointers are slated to open their home schedule when they host UW-Oshkosh for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 10 beginning at 1p.m.
