WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team opened its 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule by winning both ends of a doubleheader against UW-Platteville Friday, 7-1 and 14-3.
Weather conditions forced the Pioneers to host the Pointers at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater, Wis.
GAME 1 (Box Score)
UWSP (10-3, 2-0 WIAC) starting pitcher
JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) held the Pioneers hitless through six innings and
Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) ripped a two-RBI double in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie.
Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) led off the top of the sixth inning with a single up the middle and proceeded to steal second base.
Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) followed with a walk, and Coady belted a double off the centerfield wall to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Schilter tacked on an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Pointers a 3-0 lead.
Plateville (5-13, 0-4 WIAC) shortstop Tyler Jacobson broke up Feyereisen's no-hit bid by leading off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double that narrowly stayed fair down the third-base line. Jacobson later scored on a double by
George Jester to cut the UWSP lead to 3-1.
The Pointers added three more runs in the eighth inning, all coming with two outs.
Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded,
Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) followed with an RBI single, and Schilter followed with a bases-loaded walk to put UWSP ahead 6-1.
Feyereisen allowed just four hits and walk through eight innings while striking out nine.
Game 2 (Box Score)
The Pointer bats stayed hot in the second game by tacking on four runs in the first inning.
Douglas began the game with a single and advanced to second when Gerber drew a walk. Coady's single scored Douglas for the game's first run.
A wild pitch allowed Gerber to score, and
Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) followed by reaching base with a walk.
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) doubled down the left-field line to plate both Coady and Barnes, giving UWSP a 4-0 lead.
The Pioneers scored a run in the second inning, but the Pointers added three runs in both the third and fourth inning to go up 10-1.
Schilter opened the fourth inning with a talk and then stole second. Geber's double to right field easily scored Schilter, and Gerber eventually touched home on an RBI single by Coady.
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) knocked in Coady with an RBI single to put UWSP ahead 10-1.
A four-run fifth inning for the Pointers was highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Barnes and RBI singles by both Schilter and Gregorich.
The Pointers and Pioneers play another doubleheader Saturday, April 6 beginning at 10 a.m. in Whitewater.
