Home runs power Pointers past St. Scholastica

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) belted four home runs and Bryton Guckenberg (Trego, MT/Lincoln County) added two of his own as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team rolled to a pair of nonconference victories over the College of St. Scholastica 10-4 and 8-4.

The wins improve the Pointers to 17-6 overall.

Game 1 Box

St. Scholastica took its only lead of the day in the top of the first inning, but Gerber put UWSP back in front during the home half of the frame, belting the first of his four home runs over the centerfield fence.

A pair of runs in the second gave the Pointers a 4-0 lead and home runs by Gerber and Guckenberg gave UWSP the 6-1 lead.

The Saints cut into the UWSP lead in the sixth, plating three runs to pull within two, 6-4.

Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West)'s double in the home half of the sixth put the Pointers back in front and Guckenber's second home run of the game in the seventh aided in another two run inning as UWSP went in front for good, pulling away for the 10-4 victory.

Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) picked up the victory, throwing six innings of seven hit baseball, striking out three. Luke Watson (Appleton, WI/Xavier) came on in relief, throwing three scoreless innings, striking out four.

Game 2 Box

Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) and Schilter scored in the first and Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) scored in the second to give the Pointers an early 3-0 edge.

In the fourth, after a Schilter walk, Gerber belted his third home run of the afternoon over the left centerfield fence, pushing the UWSP lead to 7-1.

Gerber's fourth home run of the day came in the seventh, a solo shot, to finish off the scoring.

Nash Bell (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) picked up the victory in relief of starter Zach Wendorf (Merrill, WI/Merrill). Bell threw 2.2 innings of four-hit baseball and did not allow a run, striking out three. Ben Messenger (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) and Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) each threw an inning in relief.

UWSP returns to action with another pair of nonconference games on Tuesday, April 23 against Ripon College. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
