Pointers open home schedule by sweeping UW-Stout in doubleheader

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team opened its home season by sweeping UW-Stout in a doubleheader Wednesday.

Game 1

Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) hit a pair of RBI singles and UWSP (15-6, 7-3 WIAC) starting pitcher JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) was solid through seven innings as the Pointers won their first home game of the season, 2-1.

Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) reached on an error with one out in the first inning and moved up to second base when Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) grounded out to first. Coady followed by drilling a single into centerfield to score Schilter.

The Blue Devils (7-14, 1-5 WIAC) tied the game 1-1 when Colin Pechacek reached on a fielding error by Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pachecek then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Hallahan to even the score.

The Pointers reclaimed the lead for good when Schilter hit a one-out single in the fifth inning and promptly stole both second and third base. One again, Coady came through with an RBI single to score Schilter.

Feyereisen earned the win by allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out six through seven innings.

Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) was perfect in the eighth and ninth innings to record the save.

Both Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) and Coady finished 3-for-4 at the plate.

Game 2

The Pointers scored six runs in the first inning en route to topping the Blue Devils 12-1 in seven innings.

Douglas opened the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line and scored when Coady reached on an error by the Stout second baseman.

Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) and Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) singled to load the bases, and Bryton Guckenberg (Trego, MT/Lincoln County) reached on a fielder's choice that scored Coady.

Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) was hit by the very next pitch with the bases still loaded, giving UWSP a 3-0 lead.

Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) drew a bases-loaded walk, and Douglas smacked a single up the middle to score two more runs and put the Pointers ahead, 6-0.

The Pointers added three more runs in the second inning when Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) hit an RBI single,  Douglas drew a bases-loaded walk, and Gregorich took home on a passed ball.

Gregorich accounted for five runs in all by crossing the plate three times and driving in two runs.

UWSP starting pitcher Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) earned the win by throwing six innings and allowing just four hits, two walks and an unearned run while striking out six.
