Pointers split doubleheader with St. Olaf in final day of Florida trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – In its final day in Florida the UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Olaf Wednesday. The Pointers were shutout for the first time this season as St. Olaf escaped with a 1-0 win in the first game, but the UWSP bats came to life in the second as the Pointers claimed a 10-2 win.

UWSP (8-3) starting pitcher JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) threw all six innings of the first game and allowed only three hits and a walk.

Despite Feyereisen's complete-game efforts, St. Olaf's game-winning run came in the sixth inning when Nick Kulla led off with a single and eventually scored the game's only run on a throwing error.

The Pointers bats came back to life in the second game to total at least 10 runs for the fourth time in their last five games.

Each of the first three UWSP batters of the second game reached base when Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) (2-for-3, 2R) and Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) (3-for-4, 2R, 2RBI) singled, and Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) (2-for-3, R, 3RBI) drew a walk to load the bases.

Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) (1-for-3, 3RBI) singled in Douglas and Schilter stole home to give UWSP a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

St. Olaf evened the score in the third inning, but Gerber drove in a pair of runs in the fifth inning to give UWSP a 4-2 advantage.

The Pointers scored six more runs in the sixth inning to secure the win.

Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) earned the win for UWSP by throwing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen while striking out five.
