Pointers sweep St. John's in final night at Metrodome

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team rounded out its four-game stint in the Metrodome by sweeping St. John's University in a doubleheader Monday night, 12-5 and 5-3.

Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score (game does not count unless completed)

In the first game of the doubleheader the Pointers (4-0) scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings to grab a 4-1 lead.

An RBI single by Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) (3-for-5, 2 R, RBI) gave the Pointers a 5-1 lead through 4-1/2 innings, but the Johnnies stormed back and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game 5-5.

In a game slated for seven innings, the Pointers needed one extra inning to top the Johnnies (2-4).

UWSP scored seven runs in the eighth inning and both Schilter and Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI) smacked RBI doubles in the frame.

Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) (2-0) picked up the win for the Pointers by tossing 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen while striking out five.

Game 2 (stats/win does not count unless completed)

St. John's posted three runs in the first inning of the second game, but UWSP starting pitcher Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) (1-0) found his groove and allowed just one hit beyond the first inning.

The Pointers cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third inning when Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) (2-for-2, R) belted a double and later scored on a single by Schilter (1-for-3, RBI, R). Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) (2-for-2, R) drew a walk to move Schilter to second, and a pair of wild pitches allowed Schilter to score the Pointers' second run.

Gerber began a two-out rally for the Pointers in the fifth inning when he belted a double to left field. Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West) (1-for-3, RBI) followed with a nearly identical double to score Gerber and tie the game 3-3.

Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) (1-for-3, R, RBI) followed with a triple to straightaway centerfield to drive in what would stand to be the game-winning run.

Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) (1-for-3, RBI) singled to left field to provide UWSP with an insurance run.

Frederick pitched all five innings and recorded four strikeouts.

This season marks the second consecutive year in which UWSP has opened the season with four consecutive wins.

The Pointers travel to Auburndale, Fla. on March 22 to play their next seven games.
