HANOVER, Ind. - The UW-Stevens Point women's cross country team ran to a 28th-place finish at the Division III Championships on Saturday morning.
Results
The Pointers were making their first appearance at the national meet since 2010. UW-Stevens Point had a total of 640 points in the 32-team field. Johns Hopkins took the title with 85 points.
"It wasn't our best race but I think they learned a lot," said head coach Megan Woloszyn. "The NCAA Championship race is different from all the other ones because everyone there is the best in the country. Making a small error, like not getting out as hard as we should've, can set you back for the whole race."
Junior
Ana Breit (Stevens Point, WI/Pacelli) led UWSP with her 112th place finish in 22:42.9.
Julia Colling (Maplewood, MN/North), also a junior, was 10 places behind Breit, with a time of 22:45.5.
Juniors
Lauren Dilley (Middleton, WI/Middleton) (178th) and
Paige Haberkorn (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) (213th) were the third and fourth Pointers runners on the day.
Kelsey Laska (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah), the team's lone senior, was 217th, followed by junior
Holly Winberg (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) in 218th. Junior
Haley Steig (Osseo, WI/Osseo-Fairchild) was 227th.
Next year, UW-Stevens Point will lose Laska, an all-region runner in her senior season but will return three all-region performers in Breit, Colling and Steig.
"We only lose one senior so we'll definitely be back and will use that [what we learned] to our advantage," Woloszyn said.
