Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team started the 2012 season with a pair of wins over Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday, defeating the Gusties 3-2 and 5-1 at the Metrodome.

The Pointers started out strong in game one as Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) and Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) singled and later scored on a Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) triple to right center, giving UWSP an early 2-0 advantage.

The Gusties tied the game in the top of the third inning, but the tie was short-lived. Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) led off the Pointer third inning with a double down the left field line. Schilter reached first on an error and advanced on the throw while Gerber scored.

The Pointer defense shut down the Gusties as they preserved the 3-2 victory. Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) earned the win, scattering three hits and striking out six in five innings of work. Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) picked up the save, allowing one hit and striking out three in two innings.

Schilter led the Pointer offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Gustavus struck first in game two, taking an early 1-0 advantage after one complete inning. UWSP responded in the top of the second, as Schilter again sparked the Pointer offense, this time with a double to left center. Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) later tripled to center to score Schilter to knot the game at one apiece.

UWSP took the lead in the third, thanks to a C. Barnes double to right center and a single through the left side by Schilter.

The Pointers added insurance runs in the sixth, tallying three more runs to take a 5-1 lead. Schilter hit the first Pointer home run of the season while Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) tripled to left center and following two walks, Douglas singled up the middle to score the final UWSP runs.

Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) earned the victory on the mound for UWSP, giving up one hit and striking out one in 2.1 innings of relief work. Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) picked up his first save of the year, scattering three hits and striking out five in 2.2 innings.

Schilter again led the Pointer offense, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. C. Barnes was also 1-for-2 with a double while Coady was 1-4 with a triple and Gregorich was 1-for-2 with a triple.

UWSP will be back in action over spring break as they travel to Florida to play eight games throughout the week of March 17-23.
