No. 5 Pointers salvage split with No. 23 St. Thomas

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team overcame a 3-0 loss in game one to salvage a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon, picking up a come-from-behind 4-1 victory over the 23rd-ranked Tommies of the University of St. Thomas.

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

Game on starter Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) held the Tommies at bay for four-plus innings until St. Thomas was able to push across the only three runs of the game in the fifth. Frederick surrendered just eight hits in five innings of work, striking out four.

Offensively, the Pointers collected only four hits, two by Max Mittelstaedt (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh North), off St. Thomas' Steve Maher, who threw the entire seven innings, striking out seven.

In game two, St. Thomas pushed across a run in the bottom of the first, scoring off starter Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran).

Seidl settled in from there, scattering just four hits before leaving the game after 5.2 innings.

Closer Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) came on to retire the final batter of the sixth and the Pointers faced a sweep heading to the final inning.

Two quick outs in the seventh left the Pointers with only one out left, but a single by freshman Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) put runners on the corners for the Pointers. After Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, a Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) walked pushed across the equalizing run.

Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) then pushed the Pointers in front for good with a bases-clearing triple to right field as UWSP pulled in front 4-1.

Iverson shut the door on his first win of the season in the home half of the seventh, but not before loading the bases with two outs, as St. Thomas made a late push to try and complete the early-season sweep.

Barnes finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas), Gregorich and Douglas each collected hits in the victory.

UW-Stevens Point (4-1) returns to action on Monday, March 19 with a single game against Fontbonne at Lake Myrtle Field. Game time is set for 11 a.m. EST.
